Acoustic piano hard to produce soft sound, often make double sound, is this possible to fix?

Posted in Electric Piano on November 11th, 2010 by Andrew – 1 Comment

I have a very old upright acoustic piano in my house, Yamaha U1, which i think is from around 25 years ago. It was in a very bad condition, it didn’t sound right and I had asked a piano tuner to tune it for me. Now it sounds like a decent piano but it is very hard to produce soft sound with it.

Whenever I try to produce soft sound it either just sound fairly loud, or when I try to press it really really softly it didn’t sound at all. This is not about how my finger movement. I have a Yamaha P-140 electric piano and I can alternate between loud and soft sound just fine. Also sometimes when I play I notice that the note is doubled, it sounds twice even though I just pressed the key once.

Is this problem normal for old pianos? can this be fixed? Also which part is most probably causing this? I want to try to call for a piano service but I don’t want to do it without knowing anything or they would probably try to replace everything..

Thanks in advance guys, I appreciate your answers :)

Which electric piano/keyboard should I buy?

Posted in Electric Piano on November 11th, 2010 by Andrew – 5 Comments

I’m in the Market for a new electric piano/ keyboard but I’m undecided on which to buy. Currently I play a electric piano but the sound is off and the keys are loose making it hard to play.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to buy with this criteria…
-it has to be electric as I like to play with earphones in.
- preferable yamaha or another well know brand.
- by price is up to £500, but i would prefer something a little cheaper

Any help would be great :)

i have been playing piano for awhile, so I am about intermediate level. Which of the following would be best to buy? (please don’t tell me to buy a yamaha, korg, casio, etc. They are too expensive)

What type of piano or keyboard for my 6 year old?

Posted in Electric Piano on October 19th, 2010 by Andrew – 7 Comments

My 6 year old has started piano lessons recently. Her teacher uses an upright piano and she practices on a friends upright piano. Thing is, I don’t want to invest thousands buying a proper piano just yet. I don’t know whether to buy her a cheap(ish) electric keyboard, an electric piano (with keys like a real piano) or a second-hand cheaper piano?

The teacher said she will be teaching her the basics for the first year before she thinks about exams and at that stage I will have to choose whether she will do her exams in "keyboard" or "piano" I’m a total novice at all this stuff so I don’t know where to start but I wstartt like to spend any more than €1000 right now on something that she can practice on each day. I want it to look well in our living room and also sound good and be suitable for her to practice without learning bad habits etc.

I would like to have a proper piano in the house eventually as I will be learning along with my daughter as she learns, I’ve always liked tinkling on a piano every now and then but never had any training. Basically, whatever I buy won’t go to waste but I don’t want to spend (or have to spend!!) thousands at the moment.

Does anyone have any advice?

What is the best keyboard for playing rock?

Posted in Electric Piano on October 16th, 2010 by Andrew – 3 Comments

I am fairly advanced, and my keyboard is kind of broken. What keyboard would be the best that has sounds like hammond organ, synth, bass/guitar, electric piano, distorted electric piano like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGx0la0FlpU and other rock keyboard sounds. i would like if it has two keyboards like above link. but that is expensive. i want the keyboard to have split sounds (one side is one sound, other side is different sound) and 350$ maximum.
